What is a Physiatrist?A physiatrist is a medical doctor that practices the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. The physiatrist specializes in restoring optimum function to people with injuries. These injuries may be a simple as ankle sprain or shoulder pain or as complex as a stroke or head injury. Physiatrists are specialists in treating orthopedic injuries without surgery. They perform thorough histories and physical examination to identify the source of your pain, injury or disability. They offer an aggressive, non-surgical approach to pain and injury. The physiatrist can order and direct your physical therapy care, provide medication to treat your pain and injury, perform injections to relieve pain (including epidural injections), perform EMG testing, evaluate need for bracing and evaluate your disability. In the event, that surgery is required, consultation can be arranged with one of our orthopedic surgeons. If you have had surgery, the physiatrist can assist your surgeon to manage your post-operative therapy and help control your pain. Physiatrists are adept at managing multiple injuries from car accidents or workers compensation injuries. They are also trained in pain management. They work with neck pain, low back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain and hand pain. They treat chronic pain, myofascial pain, spinal stenosis, disc herniation, radiculopathy (pinched nerve), tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome without surgery. Physiatrists have numerous treatments available to reduce or eliminate your problems and to decrease the possibility of recurrence. |
